Teacher Education Department

The Teacher Education department seeks to develop teachers who will positively impact the lives of students. Five elementary and secondary education programs lead to teacher certification in the state of Virginia upon the successful completion of all program requirements including the Praxis® Subject Assessment(s) specific to the licensure endorsement area, the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment, and for primary and elementary educators only, the Reading for Educators Assessment.  Courses emphasize the skill set needed for effective educators to meet the needs of today’s students as well as the preparation needed for students to master the Standards of Learning (SOL). The Early Childhood Education program is offered online for those who are not seeking a teaching license.

Attention Teacher Preparation Students

Prior to student teaching in the final semester of the Bachelor of Education degree program, the teacher education student will take and pass state and national licensure assessments as required by the Virginia Department of Education. Visit the Teacher Education Resources page for more information about licensure assessments.
