“Our story is a timeless tale – at least as old as Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. And as dynamic as a Tracy-Hepburn face-off,” said April Poland, director for the production and instructor of acting at the College of William & Mary.
The musical is set at a Budapest parfumerie in 1934. Georg and Amalia are disputing coworkers by day. But, by night? They’re bound by their latest anonymous mail correspondence.
“They think they know each other, but they don’t. Until they do,” said Poland. “Like other timeless tales, we never tire of this one. It reminds us of something important: that people we think we know can surprise us.”
Poland explained that the production, in many ways, is about openings: for the cast of character’s jobs, life choices and, of course, their realization of their love for one another.
“She Loves Me is a love-letter to us all, reminding us always to look deeper,” said Poland. “This love-letter is for my cast – with deepest admiration and love to them for sharing their hearts and gifts in bringing this charming classic to life.”
