The 16th Annual Chili Bowl Celebrates the Regent Spirit
Regent University’s 16th annual Chili Bowl, held on November 9, 2019, captured the heart and soul of the campus community. Students, staff, faculty and parents came together to watch flag football, enjoy an assortment of chilis, and chat with friends and family. Highlights of the day included an all-star game between the Purple Panthers and Tigers leading up to the championship game between Team 7 and the Litigators, and a chili cook-off tested by a panel of judges. The event also included an a capella rendition of the national anthem by Regent’s First Edition group, a raffle by the Student Alumni Ambassador (SAA), spirit wear and treats, a Chick-fil-a tent, inflatables, music, and a photo station, all of which made for an exciting afternoon.
The championship game started off with a coin flip by Dr. Robertson and ended with Team 7 winning with a score of 6-0. Terry and Ginger, parents of a Regent alumnus who has competed in the Chili Bowl before, see the event as a great opportunity for “comradery” and the “promotion of team sports.”
The upbeat halftime performance by Regent’s cheer team and the announcement of Summer Johnson as the chili cook-off winner followed by a group dance session were also opportunities for students, faculty, and families to take a break and experience Regent as a place of fellowship.
The excitement of the day’s events was awaited by many among the Regent community. Faculty member Dr. Hitchcock was upbeat and ready – this was his fifth year attending. He has entered his chili into the cook-off each year and believes a delicious chili has “lots of meat, [is] low on beans…and some good peppers.” In his opinion, this event is special for Regent because, “It’s like Regent’s homecoming, [and] fun [to see] all students, faculty, and alumni come out.”
Student Ruth Demeke (College of Arts & Sciences ‘20) and second place finisher of the chili cook-off this year also spilled a bit of her secret for an excellent chili. “[You need] a good balance of protein and tomato sauce [with] seasoning and strong flavors…” she said. While she was excited about her entry into the cook off, Demeke was thrilled about the family-oriented atmosphere and “both current students and alumni making connections.”
Alumni Nick and Amanda Clay have also been coming to the Chili Bowl for the past five years and love seeing the community during the occasion. Nick Clay said he loves coming back to the Chili Bowl each year and “…seeing old friends.”
While the Chili Bowl caught the attention of many with its various attractions, it was also a reminder of the love and support among everyone at Regent—new or old, student or professor, alumni or freshman—that makes Regent more than a school. This makes it a family.
