“The Diviners offers mystery and invites us to seek meaning,” said April Poland, visiting director for the production from the College of William & Mary. “Like cool water held in our cupped hands, the answer seems clear, then slips away, leaving us to dip our hands again and again into the currents of grace.”
The story is set in Zion, Indiana, during the Great Depression, where young Buddy (Austin Fitzhugh) develops a friendship with new-in-town C.C. Showers (Joshua Scott). While Buddy possesses the unusual knack of discovering water, C.C. — a former pastor — struggles in the search for his faith.
“It’s a world in which everyone is seeking something: a loved one, healing, freedom, restoration, or — against all expectation — home,” said Poland. “This is a world I wanted to live in — and still do — among the wise hearts and good people who have made Buddy Layman’s story their own. Welcome to Zion.”
