Regent University Sends More Than Two-Dozen Care Packages to Deployed Community
During the holiday months, Regent University’s social-media community launched the #RegentServes challenge, an effort to foster a sense of caring into action during a season of hustle and bustle for so many.
On Friday, December 11, Regent’s Office of Military & Veterans Affairs took the challenge a step further by sending 25 care packages to United States military servicemen and servicewomen deployed overseas throughout the Christmas season.
Mary Scott, enrollment counselor for Regent University’s Office of Military & Veterans Affairs, led the effort, asking faculty, staff and students to send the names of their loved ones currently on deployment. She and her team put together packages containing food, games, toiletries, gloves, socks and Christmas cards.
As a U.S. Navy veteran, Scott knows first-hand the value deployed service people find in receiving gifts from civilians back home.
“It’s so exciting whenever you get a package from home,” said Scott. “Not only does it show that people at home are still thinking about you, but it helps remind you why you’re doing what you’re doing.”
Scott encouraged students and Regent community members to seek information from the Office of Military & Veterans Affairs for assistance in finding organizations that “adopt” troops for care packages.
