VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (August 19, 2020) – Dr. M.G. “Pat” Robertson, chancellor of Regent University, announced today that the university has appointed long-term faculty member Dr. Joshua McMullen to the role of dean of the College of Arts & Sciences.

An accomplished faculty member, McMullen has served as interim dean of the College of Arts & Sciences since 2019. He holds a B.A. in Biblical Literature and a B.A. in Christian Education from Taylor University, an M.A. in Church History and an M.A. in Theology from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and an M.A. and a Ph.D. in History from the University of Missouri.

McMullen is a well-respected scholar of American religion. His first book, Under the Big Top: Big Tent Revivalism and American Culture, 1880-1925 was published in 2015 by Oxford University Press to excellent reviews. McMullen’s second book, The Glacier Priest: Father Bernard Hubbard and Alaska, is being favorably reviewed.

The College of Arts & Sciences has grown exponentially over recent years, and at 5,000 students is the school with the largest share of the 11,000 students that attend Regent University. The college offers world-class programs on campus and online in numerous fields including business, psychology, teacher education, biblical studies, animation, pre-law, and more.

Since 2014, the college has been awarded an “A” rating for its comprehensive liberal arts curriculum by the American Council of Trustees and Alumni. It is one of only 23 universities in the nation to receive this merit in 2020. In 2018, the college was named a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education (CAE-CDE) for the B.S. in Cybersecurity by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security.

“Dr. McMullen has proven himself to be a multifaceted leader, who has a clear vision for the critical role that high-quality, Christ-centered higher education must play in the world today,” said Dr. Gerson Moreno-Riaño, executive vice president for Academic Affairs. “I look forward to working with Dr. McMullen as we continue to deliver top-ranked, in-demand academic offerings from a sophisticated and Christian worldview.”

McMullen expressed that he is deeply humbled and honored to be appointed to the role of dean of the College of Arts & Sciences: “What a privilege to serve the LORD at Regent and to continue carrying the torch of world-class education to equip Christian leaders to change the world.”
