Regent University Faculty Honored for their Excellence in Scholarship, Teaching and Service

Each quarter, Regent University’s Office of Academic Affairs honors faculty members with Faculty Excellence Awards.

At an all-staff meeting on Tuesday, November 7, three Regent faculty were recognized for their commitment and diligence in the areas of scholarship, teaching and service.

Regent College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) professor Dr. Kevin Grimm was awarded the Fall 2017 Faculty Excellence Award in the area of scholarship.

In 2017, Grimm published a book manuscript titled America Enters the Cold War: The Road to Global Commitment, 1945-1950; a book chapter titled “Eisenhower and the Third World”; and in late-2017 he anticipates publishing a book chapter titled “One Man’s Peace: Influence on Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Nonviolent Philosophy.”

“In his three years at Regent University, [Grimm] has embarked on a roust scholarship agenda,” said Dr. Gerson Moreno-Riaño, executive vice president of Academic Affairs “In addition to maintaining a strong teaching schedule, he is exploring avenues of the Cold War, as well as examining figures who took a non-violent approach to furthering ideological, political and social agenda. “

Regent School of Divinity (DIV) professor Lyle Story was awarded with the Fall 2017 Faculty Excellence Award in the area of teaching. Moreno-Riaño called Story a “pioneer” in the area of a blended online and on-campus classroom, frequently streaming live video feeds and experimenting with 3-D videography for online students to have an opportunity to “look around” the classroom during their online courses.

His course design, through Regent’s Center for Teaching & Learning, will soon become the standard design for other courses in DIV.

“[Dr. Story] is one of our most respected and loved professors,” said Moreno-Riaño. “After 30 years in [DIV], many would be thinking of slowing down, but he is actually just speeding up. He is not just trying to come to grips with new technology, he embraces it and put it to work in new and innovative ways.”

Regent School of Law professor Lynn Marie Kohm was awarded the 2017 Faculty Excellence Award in the area of service. According to Moreno-Riaño, Kohm “embodies the cheerful servant leader,” and claims that her most important service to LAW is her commitment to coordinating a student women’s discipleship group.

“[Kohm] exemplifies servant leadership,” said Moreno-Riaño. “She works tirelessly to promote her school to external audiences … in her faculty development role, she passionately encourages faculty to develop their research and scholarship.”
