Regent University Cybersecurity Institute Hosts Air Force Association’s CyberCamps

This summer, Regent University’s Cybersecurity Institute hosted a weeklong Air Force Association (AFA) CyberCamp for high school students from Virginia Beach and Chesapeake public schools as well as local parochial schools.

The camp provided students with practical computer skills with an ethically focused and applied experience. The CyberCamp provided students with practical, valuable computer skills; including protecting their personal devices and information from outside threats and how to “harden” entire network systems.

“It’s very important to increase the cybersecurity awareness of our youth,” said Cheryl Beauchamp, Engineering & Computer Science chair of Regent’s College of Arts & Sciences. “They [compose] a large online presence that continues to grow. The program not only provides exposure to roles and responsibilities of cybersecurity professionals, but additionally, it provides overall cyber safety and ethical awareness as well.”

The AFA CyberCamp consists of both standard/introductory and advanced programs spanning 20 hours of training for students over a five-day period. Beauchamp instructed the standard camp and acted as facilitator of the advanced camp.

“I love working with these age groups,” said Beauchamp. “Witnessing their ‘I get this!’ moments and their excitement in bringing awareness of the AFA CyberPatriot programs back to their schools.”
