Regent Partners with EVMS for Graduate Medical Education
Regent University undergraduate students interested in health care careers will be able to speed up their post-graduation plans. An agreement between Regent University and Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) promises early assurance of acceptance into five health professions master’s programs. An official signing ceremony brought leaders from both schools together Monday, Jan. 5, advancing Regent’s new health care emphasis.
“This program paves the way for outstanding and qualified Regent University undergraduate students to pursue and complete graduate education in health care fields at Eastern Virginia Medical School,” said Dr. Gerson Moreno-Riano, executive vice president for academic affairs and dean of College of Arts & Sciences (CAS). “This wonderful opportunity is possible because of great leadership within these institutions.”
These leaders stressed the importance of equipping a new generation of health care professionals to meet the increasing demand for health care in the United States. Moreno-Riano; Regent’s founder, chancellor and CEO, Dr. M.G. “Pat” Robertson; EVMS president and provost, Dr. Richard V. Homan; and EVMS vice president and dean, School of Health Professions, Dr. C. Donald Combs signed the official agreement. It allows EVMS to offer Regent’s undergraduate students early acceptance into master’s programs in Art Therapy and Counseling, Public Health, Surgical Assisting, Biotechnology, and Biomedical Sciences Research.
“Health care is a growing field and I think it’s a wonderful opportunity for Regent University,” said Homan. “Our articulation agreements will provide opportunities for students here in the region, through Regent University, to articulate back into EVMS and perhaps be the health care providers who can take care of us in 10, 15, 20, 30, 50 years from now as we train the next generation of health care providers. It’s a privilege to work with such wonderful people from Regent University. I look forward to continuing the relationship and to welcoming students from Regent in the coming years.”
Regent students majoring in Biophysical Sciences, Psychology, Business, Government, Christian Ministry and Biblical Studies are eligible to apply for admission to the EVMS programs.
This initiative is part of a new health care emphasis at Regent, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. In the fall of 2014, Regent opened an Applied Sciences & Ethics laboratory in conjunction with the new degree program in Biophysical Sciences. Other new degree programs in health care management and nursing are coming in 2015.
