Regent Celebrates Maundy Thursday
A Regent University tradition continued as faculty and staff joined CBN employees to celebrate Maundy Thursday on April 2. The service reflects upon the sacrifice Christ made on the cross and celebrates communion to remember the final supper Christ shared with His disciples. Dr. M.G. “Pat” Robertson, Regent’s founder, chancellor and CEO led the service, and deans, vice presidents and other employees helped administer communion.
“We come today with a sense of awe,” said Robertson. “The fact that He died, the one who created all of this came and took on the form of a human being like us and then died, and then he came back to life again; and the reason He died was so He would exsponge the sins of everybody who’d accept Him. He washed the slate clean and is getting us all ready for the new heaven and the new earth that He’s going to create.”
Robertson says this is the reason we can live life without fear or worry.
“He’s got everything under control,” said Robertson. “He’s got you and me in his hand, and He loves us.”
Before asking God’s blessing for communion, Robertson joked that the reason Regent recognizes Maundy Thursday is because of his wife, Dede.
“I used to have communion on Good Friday,” said Robertson. “I was Baptist and figured, it’s Good Friday, why not? My converted, Catholic wife said, ‘No! You don’t have communion on Good Friday! It’s got to be Maundy Thursday!’ So that’s why we’re here today.”
Robertson reminded everyone that Christ did celebrate communion with His disciples on the Thursday before He was crucified. Gordon Robertson prayed for the communion elements, and they were distributed to everyone gathered. The service closed as the crowd joined hands to sing “Blessed Be the Tie that Binds.”
