Regent Alum Bobby Dyer Ranked #3 Best Mayor in America
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (May 15, 2020) – Newsmax released its list of America’s Top Mayors on Wednesday, ranking Regent University alumnus Dr. Bobby Dyer #3 Best Mayor in America. Dyer serves as the mayor of the city of Virginia Beach.
Newsmax’s list of the 15 Best Mayors in America is comprised of a diverse list of nonpartisans, Republicans and Democrats. Dyer received points for his city’s low crime and poverty rates. The news and opinion website sought to recognize mayors who “strive to make their municipalities the best in the country … making their communities better for their constituents.”
Dyer earned his Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership from Regent’s School of Business & Leadership. He later became a principal lecturer in Regent’s Robertson School of Government and valued faculty member. He left Regent in 2015 after 12 years of superior service.
Dyer began his career in public service when he joined the Marine Corps. After completing his enlistment, he earned degrees from Saint Louis University and Fairleigh Dickinson University. His education led him into a career in healthcare management, where his skills as a community leader and administrator blended with his passion for servant leadership.
Dyer also represented the Centerville District of Virginia Beach for 14 years on the Virginia Beach City Council, before being sworn in as mayor on November 20, 2018. He was the city’s first veteran to be directly elected for mayor.
Dyer gained international attention after a mass shooting last year at Virginia Beach’s Municipal Center. His steadfast leadership and heartfelt comments about not allowing the shooting to define Virginia Beach — a city of love and compassion — resonated with communities across the nation.
Dyer has gone on record in the past, saying: “I had the privilege of teaching in the School of Government for 12 years, and I can tell you that my Regent foundation and my faith foundation helped me stay grounded to become a servant leader.”
