Dr. Redmer Receives Award for Faith Integration
Despite canceling its conference in October 2016 because of Hurricane Matthew, the Christian Business Faculty Association (CBFA) still presented its annual awards to faculty, one of whom is a long-time member of the organization and a professor in Regent University’s School of Business & Leadership (SBL). The organization awarded Dr. Timothy Redmer with its Johnson Award, a recognition dedicated to the passion and commitment of integrating personal faith and business as modeled by Dr. Sharon G. Johnson, a professor of management and director of Institutional Research at Charleston Southern University.
“It is critical to be part of the CBFA,” said Redmer. “I’ve been involved for more than 20 years. We have hosted it three times at Regent. You develop close friendships. It’s great to be able to reconnect colleagues and share common interests. There’s a scholarship component to it, and it’s interesting to see everyone’s research as people submit papers for journals and present them.”
Redmer was nominated by Christian Business Academy Review journal editor Kent Saunders. The CBFA says Redmer’s work in promoting case study scholarship within the organization set him apart. He has traveled to several areas of the country to examine Christian-run businesses and write about his findings. One such study examined a family-owned company in Ohio that had to decide whether to outsource to remain profitable while following a biblical model to transition the business from father to son.
In addition to being published, Redmer integrates his case studies into his lesson plans and uses them to encourage his students to think critically about real-world problems.
“It’s important for students to develop critical thinking skills and realize it’s more than the numbers,” said Redmer. “The integration of faith is important. Values, integrity, and ethics also come into play.”
During his time with the CBFA, Redmer has also been awarded the Barnabas Award for Service. He says he’s honored by the most recent award, and he’s looking forward to seeing his colleagues in the CBFA next year. Professors from 60 universities attend the annual conference.
