To be restless is to be human. And with this restlessness comes the theme of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull.
The classic play opens on Regent University’s Studio Theatre stage in the Communication & Performing Arts Center on Friday, March 3-5 and continues the following weekend, March 10-12.
Friday and Saturday performances begin at 7:30 p.m., with Sunday performances beginning at 2:30 p.m.

“When I first read Chekhov’s ‘comedy…,’ I found myself just wanting to shake these people!” said director and School of Communication & the Arts adjunct professor, April Poland. “Over the past months, I’ve found my way to tolerating them, sitting with them and finally loving them.”
Though the show’s lamenting and restless characters first ground on her nerves, the more she familiarized herself with the production, the more she began to identify herself and those she loves within them.
“Every night, hearing Chekhov’s words brings both bursts of laughter and stabs of recognition,” said Poland. “I admit that, okay, I struggle and shake my fists as [the characters] do, but am I that stuck? In some ways, aren’t we all?”
“Despite its disturbing final act, Checkhov calls The Seagull ‘a comedy,’ said Poland. “It’s a strange comedy about us – our follies, our fantasies, our families – our own ‘stuckness’ and restlessness. You decide.”
