Regent to Offer Major in the “Language of Business”

According to experts, accounting is the language of business, and it’s a language in which Regent University undergraduate students will become fluent. The College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) plans to offer a new major in accounting.

“Equipping students for the ethical practice of accounting and business aligns well with Regent’s mission of preparing Christian leaders to change the world,” said Dr. Gerson Moreno-Riano, executive vice president and CAS dean.

Professors say the new degree will equip students who are considering a variety of careers.

“This new degree program aims to prepare students to pass the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam in Virginia in addition to providing them with a well-rounded business education,” said CAS professor, Sarah Bumps.

This well-rounded education exposes students to international business, strategic management, law and ethics, operations management, and financial management. The program will place a high value on professional, ethical, and responsible entrepreneurial behaviors. Like all of Regent’s programs, the new accounting major will be taught from a biblical worldview.

“We want to equip students with the knowledge, skills and behaviors that will enable them to wisely lead in various business and managerial roles,” said Dr. Joseph Bucci, CAS assistant professor and department chair of the Business, Leadership and Information Systems department. “Our students will be able to develop ethical, innovative and practical solutions from a global perspective. They’ll be able to recommend solutions to real-world problems based on strategic business applications and data-driven assessments.”

Enrollment has opened for the new major, which is offered beginning spring 2015. The program adds five new accounting courses to the CAS existing business offerings. Faculty members examined and evaluated top-ranked accounting programs from institutions around the United States before formulating the new offering, which requires 33 semester hours of accounting courses, leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting.

“The major fits well with the University’s current programs, and it allows students to consider pursuing graduate degrees in business, law or government,” said Bucci.
